Types of Auto Lifts

The automotive lift institute describes certain types of lifts and explains their characteristics in detail. These are some of the things that you should be looking for when making a decision to purchase an auto lift, vehicle lift, in ground lift, mid rise lift, low rise lift, four post lift, two post lift, or custom lift.

In-Ground Auto Lifts

In-Ground Auto Lifts In-Ground Auto Lifts

Lifts whose lifting assemblies are situated below the garage floor are known as in-ground lifts. These lifts employ one or more pistons, depending on the type of vehicle and how much weight is to be lifted. For example, many one or two-piston lifts are used to hoist compact, mid- and full-sized passenger vehicles. Three or more piston lifts are used mostly for larger vehicles, such as transit coaches and fire engines. In-ground lifts are manufactured to suit almost any type of vehicle and any type of underriage service; there is the basis single post model, the drive-through model, the drive over model, the pad type and the multi-post axle-engaging (fixed and movable piston) models to name a few.

Surface Mounted Auto Lifts

Surface Mounted Auto Lifts Surface Mounted Auto Lifts

Until the 1980's, most automotive lifts were of the in-ground type. Today, surface mounted lifts make up a large part of the total automotive lifts in use. Surface mounted lifts are bolted to the garage floor and are generally powered by an electric motor which operates either a hydraulic pump or a screw type drive.

Two Post Surface Auto Lift

Two Post Surface Auto Lift Two Post Surface Auto Lift

This is the most popular surface mounted lift purchased today. The lift arms ride up each column and are usually synchronized in one of several ways; mechanically, hydraulically or electronically.

Frame Engaging Hinge Auto Lift

Frame Engaging Hinge Auto Lift Frame Engaging Hinge Auto Lift
These lifts usually engage the vehicle's frame or its perimeter. The lift operates in either a parallelogram-style (which moves fore or aft as it rises and lowers) or a scissors-style (which moves in a straight vertical direction). These lifts may be powered by an electric hydraulic-power unit or, in the case of some short-rise service lift, by compressed air. The primary uses of the short-rise lift are tire and brake service and auto body repair.

Wheel Engaging Auto Lift

Wheel Engaging Auto Lift Wheel Engaging Auto Lift
This lift is the primary lift of many muffler, oil change, and transmission shops and those shops that perform wheel alignment. It allows the vehicle to be driven onto two runways and lifted by its tires, exposing the underside of the vehicle.

Moveable-Type Wheel Engaging Auto Lift

Moveable-Type Wheel Engaging Auto Lift
This lift is used primarily with longer, more unconventional vehicles like transit buses. Each of the independent lifting columns is mobile and contains an electric power unit interconnected with the other columns. A master control unit synchronizes the lifts so that they operate in unison.

Auto Lift Questions and Answers

Q. What Should the Capacity of My Auto Lift Be?
A. As a general rule, the capacity of a lift is probably the most important consideration. Overloading any lift is dangerous as well as being bad for the lift. You should try to choose a weight capacity that is 25% higher than the maximum weight you will be lifting most of the time. This will give you a safety factor and longevity well beyond what you need.

Q. 2 Post Auto Lift Vs. 4 Post Auto Lift
A. Certain industries prefer different styles of lifts. A general maintenance shop will almost always choose a two post lift because under maintenance as well as tire and wheel work can be performed with this type of lift. Most specialty shops, such as muffler and transmission shops, will choose a four post lift because they never do tire or wheel work. In the case of a muffler shop, it is important for the suspension to be positioned as it would be with the tires on the road for proper routing of the exhaust system.

Q. Symmetric Auto Lift Vs. Asymmetric Auto Lift
A. If you are primarily lifting trucks and heavier vehicles all of the time, it would be a good idea to use a symmetric lift. It is important to understand that a lift with a 10,000 lb rating has a 2,500 lb rating per lifting arm and it is always important to balance that load accordingly. Trucks and contractor vehicles will oftentimes have weight in the rear of the vehicle and because an asymmetric design works with a long arm and a short arm it does not lend itself to picking up vehicles of this nature. The asymmetric design is great for lifting s and trucks that are not rear heavy and it gives the user the ability to easily open the doors without hitting a post. This is the feature most users look for.

Q. Auto Lift with Overhead (Clear Floor Lift) Vs. Auto Lift with Floor Plate
A. The most preferable scenario is always to have a or auto lift with a clear floor and eliminate the floor plate. It is much easier to work under a lift with a clear floor, allowing you to easily roll around transmission jacks and mobile oil drain tanks. On the other hand, most clear floor lifts have an overall height of twelve feet and this may sometimes be a problem for taller vehicles to be lifted high enough to work under. The Ampro™ Universal Lift (soon will be added to our product lines) coves both of these issues by eliminating the overhead bar and need for the plate on the floor. A small hydraulic tubing line can be run from one side to the other to equalize the lift with hydraulics. The lift will also fit in an eight foot ceiling.

Q. Do I Need a Four Post Open Front Auto Lift?
A. A four post open front lift is generally used in front end alignment application and oftentimes gives the user better access to the part of the vehicle where the work is being performed. It is not always necessary but it is sometimes preferred.

Q. Do I Need a Storage/Parking Lift Vs. Automotive Service Lift?
A. Usually the need is either one or the other but if you are an automotive enthusiast and not a repair facility you are probably going to want both. The Ampro™ PP-4 series combines storage with serviceability. The sliding jack tray and sliding jack gives you the ability to lift the vehicle off the runways to do tire & wheel work. Solid deck options give you the ability to store items other than vehicles. Motorcycles, ATV’s, lawn equipment and more can be stored.

Q. Four Post parking Lift Vs. One Post Parking Lift Vs. X-Style Auto Lift.
A. The four post parking/storage lift is the most popular design mostly due to its versatile abilities. The single post lift is very popular when you are looking for a design that takes up the least amount of space. The single post design can usually fit neatly against a wall with no other posts or obstructions visible. The X Style lift is generally used when space is at a premium and lends itself more towards the parking industry or for dealerships with limited space in their car lots.
